You Can! (So Why Don’t We?)
Now I love an inspirational quote more than most..But I came across one the other day that made me stop and think a little longer than usual. It said... “YOU CAN”
But as I read the quote... “YOU CAN” I silently followed it up instantly in my head with... “BUT YOU WON’T... Hardly the most motivational thing I’ve ever said I know.
And I thought you’re right... I CAN... or YOU CAN... So why don’t we? Why don’t we do all that we can? We have the potential to do whatever we want, I do, You do, the person sitting next to you does.
And yet a lot of the time most of what we say we’re gonna do or we’d love to get round to doing remains undone.
Now I’m coming at this from a fitness perspective, that’s my thing but you could apply this thought process to all walks of life.
I feel the reason we don’t do somethings, all comes down to the time and effort at our disposal and our own personal priorities.
Every decision we make has an immediate outcome on the life we’ll lead from that point on.
We have to find time to sleep, to eat, to work, time for our family and friends, time to exercise, to travel, to relax, to have fun... I could sit here and reel off an infinite list of activities and things that as a human I could or should make time for depending on where that activity ranks amongst your priorities.
If I look at my own life... I have to find time for my family, my girlfriend, running my business, my training, holidays and trips, all the usual stuff like sleeping/eating/beer, doing the food shop, squeeze in a few box sets, a couple of movies, some recreational cooking and a book and I’d say that’s pretty much my life full to the brim in terms of priorities that take up all my time and effort.
Now how I rank those activities in terms of priorities in my head isn’t always reflected by my actions. I spend a disproportionate amount of time training and working than I do with my family and friends. And this could explain my modest successes at achieving training goals and the fact that my little gym business is still going after 7 plus years. But also why I’d say I have a very small circle of friends and as I sit here today haven’t seen some close family members for weeks. Now this is something I’m aware of but by no means happy about, and at any point have the ability to change, and I guess that’s life, a constant balance of your biggest priorities. And those that appear to the rest of us to have the ‘perfect’ life and have their shit together, when it all boils down to it are just more skilled at the art of balance.
Now I’d love to learn to play the guitar or learn another language... but if I’m honest it’s not gonna happen anytime soon... They just don’t rank high enough in comparison to other current priorities in my life to steal away some time and effort from my day to day for me to make any real significant progress with them... so they remain undone.
So currently No I can’t speak Spanish or play Wonderwall... but I can do handstands and muscle ups and I’ve never been overweight and I’ve not had a boss for the best part of a decade.
I think we can all agree the areas of life we direct our time, effort and attention to, will flourish... (at different rates for us all, granted, but they will move forwards) and the areas we don’t spend time, effort and attention on will stagnate and decline.
Just look at anybody who’s world class at anything, ok so there will no doubt be some genetic input or existing ability present in many cases it I can guarantee despite these factors, that individual will have spent countless hours and ridiculous amounts of effort to hone their craft so that they can become a world Leader in their field.
So if we start to round off this post by bringing it a little closer to home.
I’ll repeat the quote that got me ranting in the first place.... ‘YOU CAN!’
And instead of being as negative as I was earlier by saying ‘BUT YOU WON’T!’
I’ll pose the question...
‘SO WHY DON”T YOU?’
I invite you to look at your own priorities, which after this post I probably need to do a little myself...
Are there areas of your life eating up to much of your time and effort? Areas that in your head aren’t even a priority but your actions say otherwise?
I saw a great post this morning that was perfectly timed for this post. It said If you watched every episode of Love Island, YOU SPENT 66 HOURS DOING SO!!
Now I’m not here to judge... I’ve watched all of LOST!! But if just as an example there’s anybody out there that wishes they had time to get fit or lose weight. And would love to make these activities a priority but don’t or haven’t yet... and you didn’t miss an episode or you caught 50 / 40 or even 30 hours of that show but failed to make the gym as often as you’d planned... Maybe your priorities are skewed and out of line with your actions... thats not for me to say... that’s on you.
Now like I said I’m not judging, my priorities are skewed too... I’m never gonna learn French... because I’m too busy doing handstands and pull ups... and currently I’m ok with that... and I’m not sat here saying ‘woe is me!’ It’s not my fault I can’t say more than ‘voulez vous couchez avec moi.... c’est soir!’ It is completely my fault why I’m not learning a second language... simply by how I’ve structured my priorities... Just like it’s completely you’re fault why the things you wish you were achieving aren’t happening... it’s because you’re prioritising other things... hopefully things worthy of your time/ effort and attention and NOT Love Island.
So I’m gonna finish on that note the message is...
I / YOU / WE CAN!
The question is...
‘SO WHY DON’T WE?’
Now if there’s no give or flexibility in the answer you provide... You just can’t free up any spare time or effort to help make a new activity a priority then you will just have to accept your current position and maybe check back in in the near future...
But if your priorities are all over the place and your life balance is even more messed up than the rest of us... Have a stock take... Readdress what’s truly important to you... And I’m certain if there’s something you’ve been meaning to achieve... Free up some time and effort... And just like the quote said...
YOU CAN! AND YOU WILL!
